Twenty Eight

Ember

The clink-clunk of metal scraping against each other catches my attention and I turn my head. Through the darkness, I can see a door opening, and light pouring in, blinding me. I close my eyes and move my head down, squinting as I look back up again to see a tall humanoid creature with long gangly arms and three skinny long spikes coming from its head entering the room. My heart pounds against my ribcage at the sight of it and my adrenaline spikes quickly.

“Star! Wake up!” I shout loudly, rattling my chains behind me as I pull on them. “Wake up Star! We’ve got company!”

The creature makes its way over to me and smacks me hard on the head with its long arms, making me bite my tongue and stop my shouting. I can taste the coppery sensation of blood as I see stars. Slumping upon the floor, I hang from my chains on the wall.

As soon as I gain my composure, I begin rattling at my chains again, speaking to the creature in a menacing tone.

“You’re going to regret that…” I growl out. The creature doesn’t seem fazed and continues into the room, getting close to my Star. This makes my blood boil and I jump up into a stand, pulling at my shackles until they cut into my wrists. “Stay the fuck away from her!” I scream, seeing only red.

Another growl reverberates around the room from across the way and I know that Zero feels the same way that I do. Neither of us want this creature anywhere near our mate.

“Eek!” Star squeals as the gangly alien steps around the boxes and crates, popping into her eyesight. “Stay away from me!” She then lets out a series of gargles from her throat and my senses go into overdrive. What is the creature doing to her for her to make that sound? More gargles sound off and I think they are from the alien, not my Star.

Pulling at my shackles, I can feel the metal cutting into my flesh, but I push past the pain. My pain doesn’t matter now, only my Star matters. I have to get to her, to protect her from this deranged alien. Blood rushes from my wrists, mixing in with the sticky white residue covering my entire body. That’s when I notice a bit of give in my shackles; with my blood dripping steadily down my wrist, it creates just enough lubrication for me to slowly slip one of my hands from the chains. One hand is all I need to start my flames…

As Star screams, I dig deep inside of myself and bring forth my magic to the surface. I can feel the flames licking under my skin of my left arm and I create a large fireball, tossing it over the boxes and crates at the creature. Star’s screams continue but now it’s because she has a smoldering alien in front of her. The flames burst all over his entire body instantly, like he’s covered in a coating of flammable material.
